  1. Just wanted you to know that you are personally responsible for my averaging 5 hours of sleep most nights for the last several weeks. I just finished reading the whole series straight thru for the second time (I finished #9 and started on #1 again). LOVED all the books, and I can’t wait for the next one (next two, next three, next ten…).

I hope you develop a relationship between Stemp and his parents, as well as Ayden and John, but I also love Hellhound and the way he and Ayden relate. It’s wonderful seeing true friendship cross gender barriers, it’s portrayed very realistically.

Keep up the great writing, you’ve got a loyal fan here!

    • Oh, ouch! Five hours a night is brutal – I hope you’re resting up now. I’d apologize, but I’m actually pumped that you loved the series that much! 😀

I love my characters, so it’s great to hear that you’ve really connected with them. There are lots of times when I’m writing a scene and my jaw drops and I go, “Holy shit, I didn’t know that about _________!” So I’m sure we’ll find out more about Stemp and his parents, and lots of other little details that even I don’t know yet.

Thanks for dropping by and commenting – I really appreciate the encouragement!

  2. Hi Diane, OMG – I’m crazy about your series. I downloaded your first book last week and I’m now on your 5th. I’ve already downloaded the rest and can’t wait to finish them. I read at night until the wee hours hiding my kindle under the covers to not wake my husband, I read when I take a break at work, I read while brushing my teeth. I can’t remember the last time I was so totally into a series. I’m totally addicted to the humanity and warmth of these eccentric and intelligent characters. I love the passion and the suspense. Your writing is clever and witty and your story is unique and fresh. (I also love that you’re a fellow Canadian). I’ve recommended your series to my mother in law and friends. For me it’s Kane and only Kane all the way!

    • Hi Judy – Nice to “meet” a fellow Canadian! And, aha – another player for Team Kane. I hope you voted in the poll (lower right sidebar). Not that I’m making any promises about how it’ll all turn out, but… you never know… 😉

I’m so flattered that you’re caught up in the series – it makes my day to hear that! Thank you for your kind words, and thank you, too, for recommending my books to your family and friends. I really appreciate your support!

  3. I just finished (for the second time) Spy High. I have to express how much I love your twisty tales. I wanted so much to savor it and delay my gratification, but was unable. “Just one more chapter,” was a promise to myself I couldn’t keep. I guess I’ll just have to accept delayed gratification as I wait for Ayden’s next adventure!

  4. Thanks for offering your first book for free. I have read all nine in the last week and wish you had nine more in print with more on the way. Love that Aydan is an older woman; we are not used up after 30 and it’s great to see a ‘real’ person with the smarts and savy of a woman who has ‘been there and done that’ and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself even when her confidence is low. Love the men characters, too, although there are times I’d like to wring Stemp’s neck, too. You keep him human and I like to see his character develop. Please keep writing this series.

    Like

    • Wow, nine in a week! Thanks for reading, and I’m glad you enjoyed Aydan and her adventures! The fun of writing Stemp is that he’s so thoroughly annoying to Aydan, but from his perspective he’s just trying to do his job and Aydan is a giant pain in his ass, too.

And I’ll definitely keep writing – I’m having too much fun to stop! Thanks for dropping by! 🙂

  5. Just finished your book. Loved it. About 2 weeks ago I downloaded book bob, ad I got your first book free 2 days ago. I have never reviewed a book before. I tried your link concerning how to review but could not connect. I was hooked from the first page. The characters were engaging. The one liners made me laugh. I could not put the book down. I give you 5 stars. I am a Canadian and never knew we had such great talent here in Canada! Where do I find more of your books? I will gladly buy them all. Loved the Star Trek references too. Keep up the great work. You have a wonderful imagination. If your books get made into a movie count me in.

And it would be great fun to see them made into movies – who knows; it could happen… 🙂

  6. Great book. Lots of action and the plot has depth. And it takes place in Canada. Who knew Canadians could write more than literary masterpieces?I also enjoy a middle-aged heroine who can kick a–. I got the first book free from Book Bub, but will certainly buy the others. I can see how to write a review on Amazon, but what about on a Canadian booksellers’ website?

  8. Hi Diane, First off I just finished Book 5. The series makes for an interesting read in that it is fast moving, keeps my attention and has likable characters. I do wish there were a few more “hate-able” ones though.
You did ask for some technical corrections so this is a minor criticism mentionable only because I tend to be a bit anal anyway. In book 3 (or 4 I forget) Aydan borrows the beat up Caprice that has the hot engine and was used to win its share of pink slips. In that part of the story you mention the Hurst Shifter which is a racing set up. So far so good. I recognized it and knew that car to be a stick shift. Later Aydan and Dave are waiting for Arnie and anticipate the need for a fast getaway. You have her with one foot on the brake and one on the gas. That says automatic transmission to me. Also you mention pulling the shift into gear at one point which also says automatic. At one point accelerating through the gears she chirps the tires with each shift. That says manual transmission. I don’t recall the mention of a clutch being used anywhere.
Ok, ok I know this is nit picky but stuff like this always sticks out to me but hey, you asked.
Next week when the kids and grand kids go home I’ll lean back in my old chair with book 6. Keep up the good work.

    Like

    • Hi Patrick! Agh, good catch! I hate it when I screw up like that, but I really appreciate you telling me – I’ll get it fixed ASAP. The Caprice was definitely supposed to be a manual transmission, and I can’t believe I missed the inconsistencies. Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out… 😉

I’m glad you’re enjoying the series, and thanks again for helping me improve!

      Like

      • Ok. As promised I spent time in my old chair and finished book 6. I’m a little pressed for time and will comment more later but do a search for “whale” and consider that “wail” might have been the appropriate verb.

        Whale on.. or wail on..

I know it’s picky but I sense you are as picky as i am about some of the “small stuff”.
        Regards
        Patrick..

        Like

        • Hi Patrick – Thanks for checking in! That was a word I struggled with, too. I didn’t consider “wail” since it has other connotations, but I did consider “wale” (as in the wale of corduroy, also meaning “welt”, which seemed appropriate considering the context). But that got flagged as a spelling mistake even though it wasn’t, so in the end I went with “whale”, as in “whale the tar out of”, per both the Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries.

It still looks odd in print, though – maybe I should have just chosen a different word entirely. 😉

  10. Bob, you may be right in some way, about the frequency of the “F” bomb. However, in the real world, those types of characters, in their settings, would just not be saying “gosh darn the gawl darn luck anyway! Golly!”
Just enjoy the plots and the interactions of the characters and you’ll love the whole package.

Wow Diane , your are such a good writer. I’m so glad I found your series and can not wait till book 9 arrives😋 I’m telling all my friends to read these, they are great! The characters were so relatable and real, in some parts I was laughing out loud. Redheads rock… I could so totally picture what was going on.(temper, passion and Lucy moments) I’m voting for John, but love Arnie as well, ok so I’m torn a little, but can’t wait to see what’s up with all the characters in book 9. Aydan’s relationships, even when she denies having them, are both hilarious and sad. I’m not sure if I’m rooting for Arnie, John or both! Thanks for writing books that a 45 year old lawyer, mother and wife couldn’t put down! At least now I won’t get up at 3:30am to finish one of the books (until the next one anyway).

        • Big time! I’m an avid reader and enjoy getting lost in a book. If I come across something I find offensive, I stop reading it AT THAT POINT and move onto something else. What’s with these people??? I like the old saying I grew up on “if you haven’t got anything nice to say, DON’T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL!!” Who is this “Mel”, a NY Times Book critic?? Anyway, I am patiently waiting for Book 9. BRING IT ON!!!

          Like

          • Same here. I take critics views with a gain of salt. I have to find out for myself. Diane’s books have racey content sure, but, in the context of the story it all works. I had a teacher once that said, actually said it in class, “If you hit your thumb with a hammer, saying gosh darn the luck anyway, darn it! just doesn’t fit the emotion you feel at the time. Hence we tend to swear!” We were discussing rage moments and emotions and how different things have different outcomes. I guess Mel, and others like her/him are likened to the book burners of days gone by. Unfortunately, there are still some out there. On a cold Winters night, curled into my blankey I’ll take any of Diane’s books before Chaucer or Hemingway. I want to lose myself in her stories, not have to think about the hidden meaning of something. LOL!
And, I didn’t mean to fill the guest book with rambling. Sorry Diane. 😉

            Like

          • Maybe Mel should read “Fifty Shades of Grey” and then let’s see what he or she says about Diane’s books!! LOL!! By the way, I don’t think you were rambling with your reply. It’s good to know there are still great teachers out there and you were lucky enough to have one!! I was an English major and still enjoy a racy, trashy novel!! I already read the classics and the required reading, and yes, the Bible too. But there’s a whole world out there! I fell in love with Robert Ludlum’s espionage books and read everything he ever wrote. Then he passed away (phooey!!). Diane has now filled that spot! Thanks D!!

I actually recorded half of Never Say Spy some time ago, but I’m not satisfied with my narrating ability and it takes too much time away from my writing. 16. I was in the process of my 2d reading of #8 when hubby asked me what on earth could I get out of reading a book more once or twice? I was having a “moment” trying to pick the words right when I read a passage where Ayden was conversing with Spider about a current situation. You described her as taking too big a bite of an energy bar and the half chewed lump went down painfully. That’s it, It’s that all too familiar detail that we all have had happen to us. The details of the small things, the details that we mortal human beings experience and feel every day, many times over is what brings your characters and stories to life. We find ourselves “in” the story. We are there, hiding in the corners, climbing that wall and landing in dog poo, experiencing our socks sticking to icy snow while trying to hurry back to a warm place, LOL. You have a gift that everyone that reads your stories should feel blessed for having read them.
How’d you get so much talent? hahaha Nope, don’t want to know, I just want to keep reading your stories. Now I can explain to hubby what to look for in a good author.

I’ve read your series at least 3-4 times already, and yes, it’s that good and then some. #7 had me going all over again with laughter, tears, anxiety, the whole nine yards. Close to the end, Kane, Ayden, the plane, Ayden with the shoe hugged close to her heart, Hellhound, his black fatigues, Spider, the ring, the party, I mean……JEEZE! How can I NOT keep following this series! I will give no spoilers here, new readers have to find out for themselves, but mercy, these characters should be closely guarded as yours and yours alone. And of course the readers that will be hooked as I am. I have read many books of all kinds. I have perhaps 4 authors that I pay attention to and you are at the top of the list as you are the only one that I absolutely follow. Wonderful writing young lady, wonderful writing.

    • Hi Bev – I do take quite a bit of “artistic license” with Aydan’s language – her verbal filters vanish fast when she’s scared or hurt, and it’s no-holds-barred when she’s just inside her own head. I think as a general rule Canadians tend to be more foul-mouthed than our U.S. friends… though I’ve heard that doesn’t hold true in places like New Jersey… 😉

Anyway, I hope you found Kane and Stemp and the other law enforcement characters believable, and I’m so glad you enjoyed the series. Thanks for dropping by to comment!

  22. HI Diane, I just wanted to say thanks do much for your books, I’d been reading some pretty heavy stuff and had had enough and needed something that made me enjoy reading again and not dread what might be coming on the next page. As a 48 year old 5 foot 10 redhead from the UK myself having her own mid life crisis (and who had always wanted to join MI5 as a child but thought that was no go being so tall with the red hair and all) I am now living vicariously through Aydan (and without the risk of having to find a Kane for the juicy stuff). It is so refreshing to read about a heroine who, as you say, is at her prime and who has got the balls and guts to do and say things many people only dream of (including her potty mouth) So what if her knees creak from time to time. At least she gets more than enough ‘knee tremblers’ as well (a UK expression which I think pretty much sums up some of her ‘leisure’ activities. So keep them coming, the free book did the job getting me on board and am on book 3 and very much looking forward to the rest. Thanks again! Tracey

When I was a kid, I wouldn’t have even known something like that existed. (Mind you, I grew up in the back of beyond, so I wasn’t exactly cosmopolitan in my tastes.) 😉

I won’t mention which book it’s in but stay tuned! Later on I almost died when another “situation” came up. I actually put my Kindle down and had to walk around asking myself, “What is wrong with Diane Henders? How could she do this? There’s got to be an explanation, PLEEEEESE! ” Tissues handy is a must here. Stay with this series, as long as it continues. And stay with Diane, it’s simply become a “must do” with my time. • Thanks! I was actually going to name them something sinister-sounding, but then I thought, “Nah, that’s too predictable.” So I went with the opposite: “What’s the least-threatening thing I can think of on the spur of the moment?” And Fuzzy Bunny was born…

          • Absolutely outstanding!! By the way, I’ve been reading the other comments and your replies; everyone’s really enjoying this series! You’ve got a great sense of humor and real gift for passion……an unstoppable combination to keep a great story going. So glad Book 7 is almost ready!! Oh, I meant to ask you, is Kane based on a real person like someone you know? Sounds like a real hunk! Yahoo!

            • Kane the character is 100% fantasy. Kane the hunk, however, is a composite of a couple of the guys who work out at my gym. Yep, love my gym time… wonder if I can write off my gym membership as “research”? 😉

    • Thanks, Janet! I take it as a wonderful compliment that you missed your bus stop – it’s great to hear you were that caught up in the story (but I hope it didn’t inconvenience you too much). 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed the series, and thank you so much for recommending my books to your friends and family – I really appreciate that!

Book 7, ‘Spy, Spy Away’ will be released this month, and there will be at least two more books after that – I hope you enjoy them. Thanks again for visiting and commenting!

  34. I have consumed your Spy series too quickly. It is interesting that my husband wants to know about Aydan and “what’s happening” whenever I put my nook down. He is as curious as I am. He knows when I finish a book because I show him my sad face. I hate them to end. I am looking forward to book 7 and congratulate you on your success. Best wishes, Savannah

    • Thanks – I’m glad you enjoyed the series! And you can tell your husband that lots of male readers enjoy the books, too, so he can satisfy his curiosity in good company. 🙂

I’m hoping to finish the draft of Book 7 this week, and then it’s off to the editors, so hopefully it will be on schedule for an early release in November or early December.

Thanks for taking the time to drop by and comment – I really appreciate the encouragement now while I’m in the final intense writing stages!

  35. I am a read-a-holic, lol. Never Say Spy is one of the best books I have read in a long, long time. When I find a book as thrilling, catching and just down right hard to put down, I know I have found an author I must watch! I read at least 1 book a day and will be going after your other books tomorrow! Aydanand Kane are two of the best written characters I have read in quite a while. Thanks for sharing your talent and allowing me and your readers to truly enjoy our reading experience.

    • Wow, you really are voracious! That’s how I used to read, but it’s been hard to find reading time since I started writing. Thank you so much for your kind words – I’m glad you got a kick out of Aydan and Kane in Never Say Spy, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the series. And thanks for coming by – it always makes my day to get lovely comments like yours!

  36. I absolutely LOVE this series. I have read all 6, most in a single day. I really enjoy the characters because, let’s be serious, what woman in her right mind wouldn’t want guys like Hellhound or Kane around?! I have recommended this series to several friends who have all enjoyed them, as well. Anxiously awaiting number 7, and I will definitely start it on a day where I can be up all night without consequences! Which then means that I will anxiously await number 8.

    • Hi Lisa –
I’m so glad you loved the series – thanks for coming by to tell me! And thank you, too, for recommending my books. I really appreciate that.

I’m lucky to have Kane and Hellhound living in my head, but it’s a good thing they don’t exist in real life – I’m not sure Hubby would approve. 😉

Book 7 is coming along nicely – it should definitely be out before Christmas, and I’m hoping for November. I’ll finish it within the next month or so, and then it will go to my editors and I’ll begin Book 8. Tentative release date for Book 8 will be June(ish) 2014, but that may change.

      Thanks for visiting!
