Since COVID-19 reared its ugly head, my regular Friday Painters meetings have been cancelled.  We all know it’s best for everyone; but I miss our laughter and camaraderie, and I especially miss the inspiration I gain from being surrounded by such talented and creative people.

Several members of our group had artwork accepted into various shows this spring and summer, and of course the art shows have all been cancelled, too.

That’s just sad, so today I’m doing a Virtual Art Show featuring the work of some of my very talented Friday friends. I hope you enjoy it!

Amazingly, I’ve done a couple of paintings, too. I know my Friday friends are chuckling at this because I’m a VERY slow painter — these are the only paintings I’ve done since we started last September, and the second one’s still not finished.  But for what it’s worth, here they are:

    • I’m lucky to be part of such a talented group! It’s funny; Joanne works amazingly quickly (compared to me, anyway). I’m envious of her ability to transfer her vision to canvas so well. 🙂

    • Thank you, Helen! 🙂 The COVID situation has been steadily improving here and some businesses are cautiously reopening. Now we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we don’t get a second wave. Hope you’re staying well wherever you are!

  5. I get it, but so sorry the shows have been cancelled. But on the bright side, we get to see the art work and I’d say the you do really well as an artist! I love looking at all of them and honestly, your work is really good!! Can’t wait for book 15!!

  6. The paintings from your group are really quite well done, including yours. I especially like Lynne Rattray’s “Boldly Go”. I’ve always wanted to try a mixed media piece but really don’t know where to start. We used to to have a painting group locally but the founder suffered a stroke and is now in a care home (not Northwood, thank goodness). I don’t know how much apprised you are of the Nova Scotia situation but Northwood has been hit pretty hard by the virus and that’s where most of the deaths in our province occurred. Anyway, I did get a commission or two lately, one a coloured pencil drawing and one pet urn comes to mind. So I am doing a little art during the pandemic. It really hasn’t affected me much as I am still working, one job at least. The hours got switched a bit to comply with government regulations. On the whole, things are looking up for us here on the East Coast, I think.

    • I’m glad to hear things are looking up. Poor Nova Scotia has had more than its share of tragedy.

      And it’s great that you’re accomplishing some art – well done! I haven’t picked up a paintbrush since our group got shut down back in March; and now that I’m finally getting through the last push of Book 15, the garden is ramping up. Maybe in the fall… 🙂

  7. A great deal of talent. I love the Portrait of Tim, especially.
    Glad you are staying home and staying safe, even if it is lonely. Human touch is so important and that is what all of us are missing.
    But as the monkey said who swallowed the 8-Ball, this too shall pass.

    • Thank you! I guess painting a picture is a lot like writing a book: You have to keep working on it until it’s as good as you can make it, and then stop. It’s knowing when to stop that’s the hard part! 😉

  9. Nice of you to share your group’s art, Diane. It’s a shame this pesky virus has affected every single aspect of life as we know it, but creativity is still there, and with it inspiration. I’m inspired by your paintings. I tend to try to get mine finished as quickly as possible, but now I have more time, I should take more time.

    • Thank you — they are tremendously talented people!

      If speed got extra marks, my art marks would be in the deep negative numbers. But I have a lot of fun with the group; and if I actually manage to finish a painting or two, I consider it a happy bonus! 🙂

  11. Thank you for this virtual art show, Diane. I didn’t even have to get out of bed for it. It was lovely, a breath of fresh air, a collection of beauty and talent! Joanne Nemeth’s paintings and style really spoke to me and I could stare forever at Lynne’s first painting, “Boldly Go”, as new patterns and themes keep appearing.

    One day, if and when I’m retired, I would like to dabble with paint and see what magic happens – or not. My creativity seems to only be a mental thing. Congrats on the release date and happy promoting!

    • I’m glad you enjoyed the show — it’s fascinating to me how different paintings and styles speak to different people!

      And who knows what might happen when you get a paintbrush in your hand? As a writer, you know that the writing begins in your mind but the magic doesn’t happen until you start putting words on a page. Painting is the same – until you start putting paint on canvas (or paper), you never know what you can do! 🙂

    • Yes, thank you — I’m excited about the release date!

      And being an appreciator is a very important quality indeed. I’m not sure that everyone has it, though; and certainly not to the same degree. I’d say you’re especially talented in that regard!

        • You should give painting a try. It’s a learned skill like everything else — unless you pick up a brush and start, it’ll never happen. There are lots of great “learn to paint” videos available for free on YouTube, and even if you never create anything you want to show to others, you can still enjoy colour and creation. The artists I’ve featured today are only a few from my Friday group – there are others who come every week just to play with paint without pressuring themselves to create “art” (whatever that is). If it brings you joy, do it! 🙂

  13. Great pictures Diane, you’re all talented! Do you think that Tim would do a one woman sitting???Okay, I know that’s sexist, buy he does have very nice eyes! Either way, I’d love to see more of your future paintings.

    • Deborah did a stunning job of Tim’s portrait — those eyes just catch and hold me, too! But I admit I’m a sucker for brown-eyed weathered-looking guys with beards. I’d say Tim’s portrait could be titled “Hellhound”, but Tim’s a bit too handsome. 😉

    • You’re welcome – I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Their talent deserves to be shown off. I’m a dabbler compared to the others, but they accept me with kindness and encouragement nonetheless. And I’m slowly progressing to the point where I’m happy with some of my work (or parts of it anyway). I love this group!

      • From Spring Break until the end of school last Friday, professional attire for me was flannel pajama pants and a pocket t-shirt with welding burn holes in it. And because of the virus, I got to spend Finals Week in Denver with my sister! And yes, I got all the homework graded and my grades posted on time. Along with a great time with my sister, too, of course. Advantages are where one finds them, one supposes. Oh, and we had (more than) our share of online staff and faculty meetings, too. Simply CANNOT do without THOSE, can one?😞

  16. Very nice paintings, Diane! I see you’re channeling your inner Bob Ross, but without the afro. 😁 As nice as the others are, there’s also something about those two Joanne Nemeth paintings that is intriguing.

    Almost totally non-related, one of the car YouTubers I follow was judging in an online virtual “car show,” since the car shows (and possibly some of the cruises) here have largely been cancelled. It reminds me that if there is a will, there’s a way!

    • Yes, our Fathers Day show and shine has been cancelled, too – it’s SO sad. It’s a big event (even Oprah mentioned it) and the cars are fabulous. Hopefully next year…

      Joanne’s dotting technique amazes me. She swears it’s relaxing and easy for her, but my brain threatens to explode at the mere thought of trying organize multicoloured dots into something that beautiful.

      And Bob Ross was (and still is) my hero! Even if you weren’t a painter, watching his shows was an exercise in happiness and calm. As to the afro, well… on humid days, I get pretty close… 😉

  19. Wow your paintings are amazing, you are multi talented.

    I love seeing other people’s art work, it inspires me but I’m not great at painting unless it’s a wall.

    I make my best works of art in the kitchen these days. Although the more time I spend in it the more I realise I need more storage I’ve just had a 2hr phone call with my dad talking about how to create more space which ended up with us planning to change and reorganise my house/flat.

    Does a happy dance for the new book release can’t wait.
